David is a master of Silent Film accompaniment. David has worked as a musician in the entertainment industry for over 50 years. As a youth he worked as a church organist, his last church appointment being organist and choirmaster of the large parish church of St Mary’s, Bury St Edmunds.
Whilst studying musical instrument repair in the late 1960s David landed a Saturday night job playing organ at a Bingo Hall in London's East End, the building had been a cinema and had retained its original 1920s Wurlitzer organ which still rose from the pit. This job lead to concert engagements in other pipe organ equipped venues throughout the country. He also toured the clubs with a Hammond organ and demonstrated electronic ’home organs’ for a large East Anglian chain of music shops.
As well as recitals David is much in demand for the accompaniment of silent films in both churches and theatres. Silent film is something of a family tradition, his grandfather ran an 800 seat “Kinema" in the East Midlands during the silent film era.
David played organ for both Granada Theatres and the Rank Organisation and was the resident organist at the Mechanical Music Museum, Cotton, Suffolk for 35 years. He is now the Principal organist at the Grange Musical Collection, Palgrave, Suffolk.
